Purpose-Built Drift Car That Proves Seat Time Beats Horsepower
When it comes to building a competitive drift car, more power isn’t always the answer. This purpose-built drift car is a perfect example of how a well-balanced, low-spec setup can deliver huge results - without breaking the bank.
Designed to stay cheap, reliable, and ridiculously fun, this car was intentionally kept to a modest specification while still covering all the essential performance upgrades needed for competitive drifting.

Big Results Against Big Power
Despite its relatively low power output, the car has recently been competing in the BRD series at Buxton - and completely exceeded expectations by winning both rounds. Even more impressive, these victories came against much higher horsepower cars, proving that driver skill, balance, and reliability still win championships.
In October, the car also made the journey to Drift Matsuri, where it was awarded Best Night Demo Driver - a huge accolade at one of the most respected drift events on the calendar.

Engine Setup — Keeping It Simple and Reliable
Under the bonnet, the car still runs its factory BMW M54B25 engine, enhanced only with a raised rev limiter. Power output sits at approximately:
- 200 hp
- 185 ft/lbs of torque
This setup keeps things simple, efficient, and extremely reliable - exactly what’s needed for maximum seat time without worrying about constant mechanical issues.
Clutch Performance
With this level of power, the setup is light work for a CG Motorsport clutch, which continues to deliver the consistent performance needed for aggressive drifting. Reliability is everything in this environment, and the current clutch setup plays a key role in allowing the driver to focus on driving rather than repairs.
A new clutch has recently been installed and although it hasn’t been fully tested yet, it’s about to be put through its paces at:
- Donington Park
- Teesside Autodrome
Both events are coming up within the next week and will provide the perfect testing ground under real competition conditions.

Proof That Smart Builds Win
This build stands as proof that you don’t need huge power figures to succeed in drifting. With the right balance of setup, reliability, and driver commitment, it’s possible to:
- Take overall wins
- Beat higher horsepower cars
- Earn major event awards
- Maximise seat time with minimal downtime

We’ll be watching closely as the new clutch setup heads into its next tests - and we’re confident it’ll continue to deliver exactly what’s needed.
